LA TRAVIATA- Love. Shame. Tragedy

“Richard Eyre’s much-loved staging of Verdi’s masterpiece was a triumph of operatic spectacle”

Fiona Maddocks, Evening Standard

“Richard Eyre’s richly detailed production is meticulously recreated by Patrick Young. Bob Crowley’s designs are at one strikingly realistic and satisfyingly symbolic.”

Michael Arditti, Sunday Express

London UK, 1st June:  American soprano sensation Renée Fleming makes an historic return to Covent Garden on Tuesday 30th June, singing the lead role in Verdi’s La traviata for the first time with The Royal Opera.  The performance will be relayed live via satellite from the Royal Opera House to digital cinemas across the UK and Europe, courtesy of Arts Alliance Media, Opus Arte and DigiScreen.

Grammy Award winner (1999) and Vocalist of the Year (1997), Renée Fleming, plays the alluring courtesan Violetta Valery who breaks society’s conventions for a life with Alfredo Germont.  Alfredo convinces Violetta to elope to the countryside, leaving the tensions of Parisian society behind, but their arrangement threatens to bring scandal on Alfredo’s family and ruin his sister’s future marriage to an aristocrat. Facing a mortal illness, Violetta knows their love is doomed and attempts to free Alfredo from burden by returning to Paris, a decision that comes with dramatic results.  Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s stern father, eventually discovers that Violetta’s love is truly noble, while only too late Alfredo discovers the truth of her selfless sacrifice.

A star cast including Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja (Alfredo Germont) and American baritone Thomas Hampson (Giorgio Germont) join the company of The Royal Opera in this revival of Richard Eyre’s highly acclaimed 1994 production.  Music Director Antonio Pappano, now in his seventh Season with The Royal Opera, will be conducting La traviata for the first time at Covent Garden.

La traviata, one of Guiseppe Verdi’s best loved works, is an opera in three acts based on Alexandre Dumas’ La Dame aux Camélias.  It was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, in March 1853.

Ms Fleming’s big break came in 1988 when she was invited to sing the Countess at the Houston Grand Opera; she has subsequently sung the role of Violetta for Houston Grand Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Opera and the Lyric Opera, Chicago.
