A new opportunity has arisen at AAM for an experienced Linux/Unix Systems Engineer. Linux is used extensively throughout the business within field deployed digital cinema equipment, AAM’s own products, and internal hosted systems. This vacancy is a senior role as the primary in-house Linux expert, who will develop Linux based digital cinema products and provide expert escalation advice to the support teams for both deployed and internally hosted systems.

The successful applicant will have an expert knowledge of architecting and administering Linux based systems, be able to demonstrate advanced TCP/IP networking skills, and be very knowledgeable about PC server hardware. They will have very good communication and documentation skills and have impeccable attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and maintain standard Linux based system images for products such as media servers according to the requirements determined by the software engineering teams and the business as a whole.
  • Work with suppliers, and within business constraints, to specify and test hardware configurations for products.
  • Develop and document product build and configuration procedures for use by production and support.
  • Develop and document product support procedures for use by NOC and field support teams.
  • Provide advice and assistance to the NOC and field support teams to assist with the support of AAM products and other deployed equipment based on Linux/Unix variant operating systems.
  • Help to evolve and support Linux based internal systems such as network monitoring system.
  • Co-operate closely with software development team to ensure compatibility between deployed systems and code releases and to facilitate co-ordinated field upgrades.
  • Provide training and mentoring to other departments and staff as required.
  • Any other reasonable task requested by management

Occasional out of hours work may be necessary

Education

Applicants with further education in an IT related subject to degree level or better preferred. Formal qualifications in Unix/Linux systems administration expected.

Experience/Skills

  • Expert knowledge and proven experience of configuring and administering Linux based systems to an advanced level. Recent CentOS/Red Hat derivatives experience essential. OpenBSD experience also strongly desirable.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking including routing, switch configuration and VPNs. Ability to optimise Linux system network configurations and quickly diagnose network faults.
  • Sound and current knowledge of PC server hardware, including processor options, RAID controllers and hard disks.
  • Strong understanding of SNMP monitoring including proven experience of using and administering Linux based network monitoring systems, such as Zabbix or Nagios.
  • Excellent technical documentation skills.
  • Previous experience of administering systems handling very large files and fast networks preferred.
  • Excellent systematic problem solving skills.

AAM run a busy NOC (Network Operations Centre) which supports more than 2500 digital cinema installations across Europe. A new opportunity has arisen at AAM for an experienced Linux/Unix Systems Engineer to implement, evolve, administer and support tools for optimising the support services offered by AAM. The successful applicant will have a high degree of autonomy and have an opportunity to influence and shape the development of AAM’s NOC services.

The successful applicant will have considerable knowledge and experience of Linux based systems and be able to demonstrate advanced TCP/IP networking skills. Previous hands-on experience of network monitoring systems is essential, as well as a good working knowledge of MySQL databases. Also vital are good communication and documentation skills, and impeccable attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, administer and support NOC tools including network monitoring system based on Zabbix, mass software update systems based on Puppet, and other support tools as required.
  • Continue to develop and optimise network monitoring system, working closely with equipment manufacturers to optimise the integration between their products and AAM support tools
  • Provide documentation, training and support to NOC personnel using the AAM support tools.

You will be working for Arts Alliance Media as part of the Content and Distributor Services team. Arts Alliance Media have been mastering content for digital distribution for the past five years and is now Europe's leading provider of digital distribution services. Our client base includes some of the biggest players in both independent and studio distribution.

Job Purpose

To ensure the output video and audio is Quality Controlled promptly and correctly to ensure that all Digital Cinema content is delivered to according to the deliverables specification and suitable for digital cinema encoding.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Full QC and spot checking of content for Digitial Cinema, covering video, audio, subtitles and audio description.
  • Managing Clients when they attend QC sessions.
  • Generation of detailed QC reports using Microsoft Excel
  • Discussion of issues with encoding team of any problems encountered, particularly communication of failed and or rejected titles.
  • Work with Content Services team to ensure Digital Cinema QC guidelines are up to date.
  • Assist in any other day to day duties that may occur.

Key Attributes and Experience required:

  • A minimum of six months experience of QC or encoding is a necessity for this role as it will involve technical assessment of video and audio elements.
  • Solid video knowledge, knowledge of DCT based codec's and digital video formats would be beneficial.
  • A good knowledge of VTR decks, in particular operation of Sony HDCAM SR decks.
  • A desire to work in a technical environment.
  • Precise, great attention to detail and thorough with good organization skills and proactive approach.
  • Clear and concise reporting and communication of errors and problems to the Encoding team.
  • Patience when dealing with the same piece of work over several reviews.
  • MS office and IT skills essential.
