3D and Innovation

Digital technology enables 3D films to be shown from a single projector and server, with a vastly improved viewing experience over 35mm 3D

3D offers a unique experience over
home entertainment

Many high profile directors (Lucas, Rodriguez, Cameron, Burton) are making or remaking their films in 3D, solely for digital exhibition, and Dreamworks have announced that from 2009, all their titles will be released in 3D.

Evidence to date from the first 4 3D titles shows that a 3D film takes approximately 3 times the revenue per screen, and double the number of tickets sold, as the 2D version of the same film. 2D screenings at a complex with a 3D screen also show increased average takings.

In November 2007, Paramount/Warner Bros. Beowulf became the largest 3D release ever, opening on over 1000 screens, and in February 2008, Disney's 3D concert movie 'Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour' grossed $31m on 683 screens on its opening weekend.

The number of 3D screens is currently around 1300 (the majority in the US). This number is predicted to rise to over 6000 by 2009.
