3D

Digital technology enables 3D films to be shown from a single projector and server, with a vastly improved viewing experience over 35mm 3D.

Many high profile directors (Lucas, Rodriguez, Cameron, Burton) are making or remaking their films in 3D, solely for digital exhibition, and Dreamworks have announced that from 2009, all their titles will be released in 3D.

Evidence to date from the 3D titles shows that a 3D film takes approximately 3 times the revenue per screen, and double the number of tickets sold, as the 2D version of the same film. 2D screenings at a complex with a 3D screen also show increased average takings.

In Summer 2008, 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' played in 3D on 854 screens (out of a total of 2811) but the 3D screenings took 57% of the opening weekend box office, and in February 2008, Disney's 3D concert movie 'Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour' grossed $31m on 683 screens on its opening weekend.

In January 2009, Lionsgate's 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' took a record breaking (at the time) £1 million. Screens showing the film in 3D took on average over 3.5 times the box office of the 2D screenings.

By March 2009, when 'Monsters vs Aliens' opened in the US, it played on over 2000 3D screens, and 179 3D screens in the UK on opening weekend.

The release of Avatar marked a watershed moment in 3D, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, with around 75% of takings coming from 3D screenings.

The number of 3D screens is currently around 9000 (the majority in the US). This number is predicted to continue to rise - over the last several months 3D screens in the US were being installed at an average rate of 150 per month.
